Speaking

I love sharing with students and professionals to demystify the tech industry and empower folks with helpful, actionable advice. My talks are always full of concrete examples, helpful templates, and actionable takeaways.

Topics: I've covered a range of topics including agile teams, product managers + developer relationships, product managers + UX relationships, how to build habit-forming products, UX and content strategy case studies, storytelling, career transitions, and more.

If you think I might be right for your group, let's connect!

Agile teams, product managers, engineers

Working together:
Agile teams & developers & product managers

At Avvo, I worked with awesome engineering interns from Ada Developers Academy and Code Fellows. They shared that there were many things they had no clue about before joining our workplace - how agile teams worked, who they would work with besides engineers, what they might be building, etc. I realized I could help!

I’ve given this talk at Code Fellows and Ada Developers Academy. In it I cover: how agile teams work including short case studies, what do product managers do, how to be an amazing engineering teammate, and a starter kit for disrupting bias in technology.

UX and Product Management on Agile Teams

UX & Product management on agile teams

As a product manager with a UX background, this was a special one! I spoke to students in the "Introduction to User-Centered Design" class, part of University of Washington's Graduate School of Communications, about how UX and Product Managers work together on agile teams. I covered my career path and tips; how agile teams work; what Product Managers do, the skills they need, and how to get them; how Product Managers & UX work together on agile teams (lots of overlap); and a few case studies showing the range of UX & PM involvement depending on the project.

The Hook Model - by Nir Eyal

Workshop: Building habit-forming products

A while back, I was introduced to a few things around the same time: Nir Eyal's book Hooked: How to build habit-forming products, Sarah Tavel's Hierarchy of Engagement, and Expedia's "loops" philosophy. These frameworks were super relevant to my work at the time, as my UX design partner and I were in the thick of redesigning our users' core experiences. After putting these learnings into practice with a few groups, I eventually created an interactive workshop that I led for our Product, Engineering, and Marketing teams. I can certainly curate and customize to your group!

Career Transitions - Danielle Martin

Career transitions

I gave this presentation to the Ladies That UX meetup group. Product Managers come from all backgrounds, and my UX background has been so helpful in my PM work. I'm biased, of course :)  I wanted to share my career path to inspire other UX folks to consider the PM track.

App Camp for Girls - Presentations 101 - Danielle Martin

Presentations 101

I volunteered as the presentation coach for App Camp for Girls in 2017 and 2018. I covered tips about storytelling, understanding and speaking to your audience, presentation design, presentation delivery, and some specifics for their App Camp for Girls "pitch" (where the campers demo their app to a panel of friendly "judges"). Learn more about App Camp for Girls.

UX content strategy case study - Danielle Martin

UX Content Strategy Case Study

I shared this case study with University of Washington graduate students. It covers my team's process to enroll attorneys in our Avvo Legal Services program, focusing on the specific considerations and work I completed as the UX content strategist.
